Cliff Bosley, one of Ultimate Body Boot Camp Instructors is in need of your help.

In 2007, Cliff was training for a martial arts fight and during the pre-fight physical, the doctor noticed an abnormality and sent him for an MRI. The MRI, in August 2007, revealed an enormous tumor growing in the left side of his neck on the carotid artery. After many Dr visits and surgical consultations,  it was discovered that there were actually 3 tumors: one in the right ear on the eardrum, one in the neck attached to the right carotid artery and cranial nerves, and the large one in the neck connected to the left carotid artery and cranial nerves. They were all the same type, called Paraganglioma, which are rare growths of encapsulated nerves. Though they are benign tumors, they have malignant tendencies which include cyclic, rapid growth cycles. The location of these tumors make life very difficult, as they cause irregularities in blood pressure, do havoc on your endocrine system, among other complications. The large tumor in the left neck had grown so quickly that it had begun to severely constrict his airway into a winding "s" pattern and encapsulate and destroy some of his cranial nerves. He underwent surgery on the large tumor in November 2007, was in the hospital for a month and upon discharge is when things became increasingly difficult. He's suffered much nerve damage, the most noticeable was the paralysis of his left vocal chord. Because of the time away from work for the surgery, recovery, complications from the procedure, ongoing Dr visits and follow up surgeries, the majority of his clients had moved on. After recovering for over a year, his airway still constricted and unable to breathe well, much less exercise, things clearly weren't improving. After going back to the drawing board, more research resulted in finding a Paraganglia expert at Vanderbilt University,  Dr Netterville.

Cliff and his wife visited Dr Netterville this past October and learned that not only was the first surgery unsuccessful, but the left carotid tumor, 2 years later was larger than when we started in 2007. Somehow, Dr Netterville was still optimistic in his surgical plan. This strategy was to treat all 3 tumors within a year. This treatment began in December, 2009 when Cliff underwent 2 surgeries, one on the right carotid body tumor and the second on the right ear tumor. Though both were met with minor complications, they are considered successful. Now, the final surgery is upon us. It will, unfortunately be the most complex of them all. The surgical team will not only be attempting to remove the large mass, but also to save the carotid artery with minimal side effects.

As this is the final surgery on the most stubborn tumor, the procedure and recovery time will be the most significant of them all. This has been a long and difficult journey, but your support from last fall's Boot Camp With a Purpose has made a difference and made this journey easier to travel.  The ups and downs Cliff and his family face include traveling to Nashville from their home in Phoenix, AZ, the time off of work, the medical bills and day-to-day ones that pile upquickly, is presenting to be an on-going obstacle. Life can easily go from a mole hill to a mountain in a short time. There is light at the end of this tunnel and we are almost there! Please help a fellow Boot Camper by coming out Saturday, July 24th at 8 AM and 9am to get a great workout not just for your body but for your heart as well.  No donation is to small, all kindness is great.  Thank you for your generosity and continued support.
